Greta Gerwig's Little Women
Hi Everyone!
Today I am going to review the recent movie of "Little Women". I really enjoyed this movie, and I will tell you more about it.
Little Women is a retelling of the classic novel of the same name. It portrays four sisters; Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. It is just a simple and beautiful story about growing up, and also some of the struggles that women faced in the era it was set in (1860's during the period of the American Civil war). Meg is a girl who dreams of finding love, and being an actress. Jo is a tomboy who doesn't want to fit into her society's representation of a girl. Beth is just a simple girl who loves her family and her piano. Amy is the baby of the family, who hates being second to Jo and loves to paint.
I grew up reading Little Women, and I have read all four books in the series. I really do think that this movie did the novels justice, and if Louisa May Alcott was here, then she would've really appreciated the retelling. I think that the last movie (1994) was very good as well, but there were certain characters and aspects that I think the 2019 movie did better.
One of the best parts of the new movie was the portrayal of Laurie. In the books Laurie was always very immature and not very serious, and I think that this movie was very accurate in its portrayal of him. In all the other adaptations of Little Women that I have seen, Laurie was portrayed as a serious, mature young gentleman. But this movie shows a completely new side to him which I absolutely love.
Of course one of the major differences between this movie and any other Little Women adaptation is that it is not shown chronologically. If you haven't seen the movie you might be a tad bit confused. Basically childhood is shown as one story line, adulthood is shown as another storyline, and the movie jumps between each storyline. I think this actually really does something exciting and different with the story. It almost adds to the emotions that you feel as you watch it.
I also love that this movie ends the way that Louisa May Alcott would have wanted. She was an author, just like Jo in the movie, and she never got married. She actually based Jo's story loosely on her own life. But in her day unmarried women were looked down upon, so obviously Jo had to get married in the story. I won't give anything away, but let's just say that Louisa May Alcott would definitely have been proud.
The only downside to the movie is that I think you need to know the basic story of Little Women to really appreciate it. I don't know if I would've fully understood the movie had I not known the story already. But I do know people who have watched it without reading the books, and really loved it so maybe I'm wrong.
I still think that this movie is amazing though, I would give it an 8.5/10. I would recommend it for anyone who loves Little Women.
Wonderful review Rebekah, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised at how good the movie was (as I thought it might not be as good as the 1994 version :) ).
